Often, we spend so much time in a place, we may begin to take it for granted. I just wanted to touch on how intertwined our lives can be as sports fans in this great city. When people are moving to the area, it's hard to encompass, in words, how much Boston has to offer. Telling my own stories from this past month, I've realized would better paint a picture about how amazing this area is.
I, like many of you all, am a Celtics fan. It's been fun being spoiled with all the Boston sports championships the last 25 years. The Celtics have had such small success when compared to the Red Sox or the Patriots, and with a short stretch between any championship from any sport, the city was ready for one.
When the playoffs start and our teams are in it, the buzz around the city provides an energy unique to sports. The anxiety, what-if's, potential scenarios, etc. either draws you into its spiral, or drives you crazy because its too much. But it is special...
I was able to attend one of the watch parties at the Garden. It was an awesome experience, and a great atmosphere to bring your kids...when they aren't blown out by a million points! A memory I'm sure our family will bring up forever, some of the best memories come from the most disappointing of outcomes. You have to be able to laugh at them! It was amazing to see an arena, I'm used to seeing games or huge music acts at, sell out for a group viewing. In hindsight, that's pretty cool.
For one of the games, I received a chance text completely unexpected, from an old friend I hadn't seen in over 10 years. Having a game to go watch when he was visiting the city prompted him to reach out to a few of our friends to meet up. As exhausting as a playoff run can be, its amazing how many memories and reasons to be out with friends get created that wouldn't normally have.
After the Celtics won, over 1.5m people came into the city to celebrate. They never get old. I took my son, Danny, up to our office in Copley Square and got to see a birds eye view of 10s of thousands packed into the square to catch a glimpse of our champion Celtics. Couldn't help but feel a little prideful about where I'm from and what we're all about.
It may not be the most consistent, or top selling feature that draws people to the Boston area, but if you can ever be a part of them when they happen, its pretty clear why we have such an amazing city.
