The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is a transformative organization that has empowered countless Black and Brown students, like myself, to explore STEM fields and expand their horizons through networking and invaluable opportunities. I was a member during high school while attending O'Bryant School of Math and Science, and while my path didn’t lead me directly into STEM, the experiences I gained from attending events to interacting with professionals were irreplaceable. The exposure to leadership, collaboration, and travel provided me, and many others, with skills that transcend any single career path. It was very eye opening to another world of opportunities I wouldn't previously had known about.
NSBE has a long-standing history of supporting Black students in pursuing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers. Founded in 1975 at Purdue University, the organization has grown into one of the largest student-run organizations in the U.S., with over 600 chapters worldwide. Its mission, "to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community," resonates deeply in a city like Boston—a global hub for biotech, engineering, and technological innovation. For any child with an interest in science or engineering, NSBE offers unparalleled exposure to fields like computer systems, mechanical engineering, robotics, biotechnology, and more.
NSBE Jr., designed for students from kindergarten to 12th grade, offers unique hands-on experiences through robotics competitions, mentorship programs, and community engagement activities. Locally, the South Shore NSBE Jr and other local chapters. chapter is currently enrolling new members for the 2024-25 school year, inviting students from grades 6-12 to join a vibrant community where they can explore their passions for STEM. Programs like this provide students not just with academic challenges, but with opportunities to engage directly with professionals in the field, sparking interest in careers that are shaping the future.
Beyond its academic and professional focus, NSBE creates a supportive network, offering students leadership training, scholarships, and development opportunities that go beyond the classroom. The South Shore chapter, like others across the country, plays a vital role in preparing young students for future success, aligning with NSBE’s broader Pre-College Initiative (PCI), which aims to encourage early engagement with STEM subjects.
For students and parents looking to give their child an edge in STEM, NSBE Jr. is a gateway to discovering a world of potential, not only in science and engineering but in leadership and community involvement. As an alumnus, I can attest that being part of NSBE shapes more than just career aspirations—it instills confidence, resilience, and a global perspective that stays with you, no matter your ultimate path.
If you’re in the BOSTON AREA, now is the time to get involved and invest in your child’s future.
